Blue Echohawk doesn’t know who she is. She doesn’t know her real name or when she was born. Abandoned at two and raised by a drifter, she didn’t attend school until she was ten years old. Blue Echohawk doesn’t know who she is. She doesn’t know her real name or when she was born. Abandoned at two and raised by a drifter, she didn’t attend school until she was ten years old. At nineteen, when most kids her age are attending college or moving on with life, she is just a senior in high school. With no mother, no father, no faith, and no future, Blue Echohawk is a difficult student, to say the least. Tough, hard and overtly sexy, she is the complete opposite of the young British teacher who decides he is up for the challenge, and takes the troublemaker under his wing.

This is the story of a nobody who becomes somebody. It is the story of an unlikely friendship, where hope fosters healing and redemption becomes love. But falling in love can be hard when you don’t know who you are. Falling in love with someone who knows exactly who they are and exactly why they can’t love you back might be impossible.

I didn’t know what grace was, but maybe it sounded like the music. Maybe that was what I was feeling. How sweet the sound. And it was sweet, impossibly so. How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. Was a wretch the same thing as being a bitch? Or a slut? My life was not a testament to being saved from anything. It was not a testament to love – not anybody’s love.

Blue Echohawk has not led an easy life, and this is putting it mildly. Her mother abandoned her when she was around two years old leaving her in the back of a truck belonging to Jimmy Echohawk, a man who had sat with Blue at a table at a diner the evening before and a man who is a drifter. Jimmy took Blue under his wing and raised her until the age of ten when he inexplicably disappeared and was later found dead. This left Blue in the hands of Jimmy’s sister, a woman who she had met only a handful of times. Blue doesn’t know her real name, nor does she know her real age. She doesn’t know who her real parents are, her history. Everything is an unknown to Blue, an unexplainable void. Nothing makes sense. Needless to say, Blue walks around with a huge chip on her shoulder keeping people at a distance and only giving what she wants of herself. In her senior year of high school, Blue meets a young British man who is her history teacher. What she had no way of knowing is that this man would change her life and her history would finally come to light.

“Why don’t you focus more on where you’re going and less on where you came from? Why don’t you focus more on what makes you brilliant and less on what makes you angry?”

Darcy Wilson is a young history teacher living in the U.S. This is his first year teaching, after moving to the United States. When Blue Echohawk first appears in his classroom he sees trouble. As the school year progresses Blue goes from this girl who keeps everyone at a distance with scowls and aggressive behavior to opening up and actually showing how bright she truly is. Wilson and Blue develop a friendship that only really establishes itself after Blue graduates. Wilson becomes an integral part of Blue’s journey in finding herself and somehow in all the self-discovery that Blue goes through, the pair find love.

Resolution. Redemption. My life had began to circle around those reoccurring themes.

    *

I was scarred but I was not broken. Beneath my wounds I was still whole. Beneath my insecurities, beneath my pain, beneath my struggle, beneath it all, I was still whole.

After graduating Blue decides to change the destructive path she is on. Circumstances make this more difficult that she could have ever imagined and she is forced to make some extremely difficult choices. Throughout it all, her friendship with Wilson provides her with the stability and care she so desperately needs. Although she has deeper feelings for Wilson that she cares to admit, Blue finds that she needs Wilson to be her pillar of support. Wilson shows Blue such compassion and gentleness that it was hard not to fall hard for him. As Blue and Wilson become closer he realizes that she is strong, brave and deals with life’s blows with her head held high. It was to be admired.

“I keep wishing you had a better life… a different life. But a different life would have made you a different Blue. And that would be the biggest tragedy of all.”

A Different Blue is a book that slowly crept up on me. It is a quiet book, but very powerful nonetheless. It is intricately written with many layers and sub-layers. All the lessons are there, but the reader must stop, think and find the actual path and discover on his or her own. At first I was unsure if I would like the book. I was having a hard time liking Blue in the beginning. All I saw was a hard-ass bitchy girl with a huge chip on her shoulder. As the story progressed and more layers were added, Blue became this wonderfully complex character and I found myself understanding her and hurting with her. I started seeing her how Wilson saw her – courageous, generous and caring. Amy Harmon took the storyline to places I was not expecting. I will just say that the synopsis does not even touch where the story eventually leads you as the reader. This was one of the more intriguing parts about reading this book and I found that I had a hard time putting my kindle down.

“I’ve never felt about anybody the way I feel about you,” I confessed in a rush. “I can’t imagine that what I’m feeling isn’t love. But ‘I love you’ doesn’t feel adequate to express it.”

Although the romance between Wilson and Blue eventually forms part of the plot, it is not really the focus of the overall story. What I believe is the main story of this book is Blue’s journey of self-discovery. Yes, Wilson plays a big part in this voyage; however, the romance is very subtle and almost non-existent. Therefore, if you want a book filled with a wonderfully compelling romance with some steamy parts, this book would not be the one. I did love the fact that the relationship between Blue and Wilson grew and changed throughout the book. They went from a teacher-student relationship to friends and, finally, to being in love. With all this being said, this is the main reason that I gave A Different Blue four stars rather than five. I would have loved for this author to have provided us with more romance between Wilson and Blue, perhaps in an Epilogue. I simply wanted more. Wilson had a girlfriend for the majority of the book so that will tell you that the romantic side of his relationship with Blue does not occur until near the end. I think, for me, having more romance would have made this book a bit more powerful and emotionally charged.

All in all, A Different Blue is a heart-wrenching tale of self-discovery. As Blue slowly discovers who she is, she finds redemption and self-worth. I was captivated for the entire book and I absolutely loved the twists and turns the author throws at us. This book is definitely a great read and one that will stay on my heart for some time as I ponder and digest the story.

“Once upon a time there was a little bird who was placed into a nest. Wanted. Cherished. Unafraid, because she knew she was a hawk, a beautiful bird, worth of awe, deserving of love…”

    One of my favourite parts:

“Someday…hopefully bloody soon – because I will combust if I ever have to spend a night like that again – you will want me because you love me, not because you’re lost, not because you’re desperate, not because you’re afraid. And that’s the goal.”

“But, Wilson. I do love you,” I insisted.

“And I love you…most ardently,” he responded, twisting my hair in his hands and pulling me toward him.

    “Pride and Prejudice?”

“How did you know?” he smiled.

“I have a thing for Mr. Darcy.

“Why don’t you focus more on where you’re going and less on where you came from? Why don’t you focus more on what makes you brilliant and less on what makes you angry?”

Mr. Darcy Wilson is british and he is a young guy- only a few years older than Blue. He moved to the state several years ago, and this is his first year teaching. Even though Blue keeps her distance from pretty much everyone, a string of events bring these two closer together and they develop an unlikely friendship. The lessons in Wilson’s class really speak to Blue and inspires her art.

‘Life is all we have, and we live it as we believe in living it. But to sacrifice what you are and to live without belief, that is a fate more terrible than dying.’

Blue is trying to find herself. She isn’t happy with the path she is on. When she finally tries to change it, things happen that make it even more difficult. She feels alone in the world, a nobody.

     photo 6f4f4fb1-2ef4-4eb4-bd3a-bd10b75e51ea_zpsb8d14af8.jpg

Wilson makes her feel like a somebody. Though they have chemistry, its just not in the cards for them to be together- even after graduation, Wilson was still Blue’s teacher, and Blue is going through a lot. But Wilson quickly becomes Blue’s best friend. He is there for her through her journey.

Darcy Wilson… What an amazing man! Caring, supportive, funny, smart- the total package. You will fall in love with his compassionate self, and British accent!
Blue was tough, she has had a hard life, but she is a survivor.

“I was scarred, but I was not broken. Beneath my insecurities, beneath my pain, beneath my struggle, beneath it all, I was still whole”

No matter what she went through or what was thrown her way, she kept it together. She was strong, feisty, and I loved how much a smartass she was at the beginning. Her life wasn’t easy, but it was hers. It made her into the beautiful person she became.

“I keep wishing you had a better life… a different life. But a different life would have made you a different Blue. And that would be the biggest tragedy of all.”

The last few chapters blew me away. It was just incredible when Blue found out about herself and everything became full circle.

An amazing, heartbreaking story about a girl trying to redeem herself, and finding herself in the process. It was emotinoal and heavy at times, but also sweet and funny. Beautiful and captivating- not one I would pass up. This one comes highly recommended by yours truly!

    My favorite line:

“Girls like me notice guys like you. We just don’t think we deserve them.”

“Once upon a time there was a little blackbird who was pushed from the nest, unwanted. Discarded.”

A Different Blue is an emotional and beautifully told story about a young girl with no history, no self-worth and no future. At least that is how Blue Echohawk sees herself when her story opens up on her first day of her senior year in High school. Late for European History class she saunters in and meets her new and very young, handsome, half-British teacher Mr. Wilson.

“My job this year is to introduce you to stories that open your mind to a broader world – a colorful history – and to help you see the connections to your own life.”

The story follows Blue during her last year of high school and beyond. Blue and Mr. Wilson were off a rocky start with a rebellious and despondent Blue fighting him every step of the way. But Mr. Wilson never gives up on Blue and slowly wins her over.

“Why don’t you focus more on what makes you brilliant and less on what makes you angry? You are missing a key element to the story…”

They settle into a mutually respectful teacher-student relationship. Follow them as they have to deal with life’s setbacks, trials and tribulations. As the school year comes to an end the roles switch. In the friendship that ensues the student very much becomes the teacher.

“Loving someone means putting their needs above your own. No matter what. Somehow, you figured that out. I’ll be damned if I know how, but you did.”

As a reader it’s clear that they have connection and strong feelings for each other, but Blue doesn’t think she is worthy of Wilson while he feels a moral obligation as her former teacher and elder by 3 years. And while Blue is truly a girl with no past, Wilson has a past to deal with.

     photo HarmonAdifferentBlueHeroinebySueBee_zps72fa5d14.jpg

Blue Echohawk is an amazing heroine. Imagine knowing you were abandoned and with no knowledge of your past and no real hope for a future. Yet amazingly on her journey she not only finds herself, but she is able to profoundly impact several people’s lives. She will stay with me! Six words to describe Blue: Brilliant, strong, defiant, despondent, captivating and lost.

“And in weeping there was power. The power to heal, the power to release pain and let go, the power to endure love and to shoulder loss.”

     photo HarmonAdifferentBlueHerobySueBee_zps56700b59.jpg

Mr. Darcy Wilson, Wilson, the prodigal son of a doctor, graduated University at age nineteen. He refused to follow his father’s foot step an instead became a high school teacher at the tender age of twenty-two. Six words to describe Wilson: Brilliant, nurturing, caring, focused, insightful and noble.

“I keep wishing you had had a better life . . . a different life. But a different life would have made you a different Blue.” He looked at me then. “And that would be the biggest tragedy of all.”

A different Blue kept me glued to my Kindle in a way I very rarely do. I needed to see Blue uncovering her past and coming to terms with her future and finding herself. I needed to know more about the enigmatic Wilson to learn what is holding him back and as their romance slowly unfolds I needed to make sure they would find their way to each other. I should not disclose any more. Their story is best experienced!!!

Spellbinding storytelling! Beautiful yet heart-wrenching plot! Compelling and unforgettable characters! A captivating and emotional read! Thanks Ms. Harmon!

“Luckily, the picture wasn’t damaged. We were still whole beneath the jagged scar. I stopped, considering. I was scarred, but I was not broken. Beneath my wounds I was still whole. Beneath my insecurities, beneath my pain, beneath my struggle, beneath it all, I was still whole.”
