Witness to a brutal murder, Anton is inducted into the Order of Thoth by the mysterious Mr. Wu. I came upon A Subtle Agency while doing my usual search of GR to feed my TBR monster. After reading the synopsis I was very curious and decided to start it right away. I haven’t read a lot of urban fantasy lately and tend to be picky when it comes to this genre. To my delight A Subtle Agency had me captivated from beginning to end.

The prologue gives a great back story set in ancient Egypt, and really sets the groundwork for the main story which takes place in modern day Boston. I am a sucker for vampire books…haha! Yes, the pun was intended. But this story has more to offer than just vampires. There are alsosecret societies known as the Order of Thoth and The Red Empire that are as prone to kill each other as they are to fulfill their purpose to eradicate the Vampire Dominion. Plus, great characters such as Anton Slayne and Chloe Armitage that are well developed and help drive the story along. But what really impressed me the most was Graeme’s knowledge of military vocabulary. The attention to detail in this area made the battles more interesting and easier to visualize. He has really done his homework and it shows in his writing.

“Those skilled in war bring the enemy to the field of battle and are not brought there by him. – Sun Tzu (The Art of War)

The quote above is used in A Subtle Agency and I thought it fit nicely with the feel and atmosphere of this book. The war between the Vampires, The Order of Thoth, and The Red Empire has been going on for millennia. They are all skilled in battle, but it will take more than skill to win the war.

I really enjoyed this book, and have already begun the second book A Traitor’s War. It is shaping up to be just as good, if not better, than A Subtle Agency. If your a fan of urban fantasy, vampires, or anything with plenty of action and intrigue I urge you to give this book/series a try. You never know! Your next great read may be right in front of you.

What a fun and action-packed book to read!

The Subtle Agency is the 1st book in the series of The Metaframe War.
I went into this book with little knowledge of the plot, characters or overall writing of Graeme Rodaughan.

I loved the secret society of the Vampire Dominion along with the Shadowstone Organization. Shadowstone is always having to clean up and coordinate for the vampires and I don’t envy that job at all! Once I got a grasp on who all the players where from the Vampire Dominion to the Order of Thoth, the book became easier to read. Just stick in there!

The action scenes in this book were AWESOME! I had no idea what some of the weaponry and ballistics were but it doesn’t matter. Shit was blowing up and the sound of pew, pew was going down. Throw in some excellent sword play with katana’s and I was good to go.

I enjoyed how Rodaughan wrote vampires in this book. I enjoy vampire stories, books and movies portraying them as a blood thirsty, calculating demon rather then a romantic character. Well done!

I’m hoping the following books in the series will help with my questions of whether the Red Empire is good along with determining what Chloe Armitage is trying to achieve.
I just hope Anton Slayne does not become her puppet. I’m also hoping Anton will grow up more in the next few books along with understanding his whole role in this world and how to become a better fighter.

I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!
Recommended for readers that love vampires, urban fantasy genres and books that just kick ass!

As I stepped back into the vampire realm a second time and relived everything surrounding the Metaframe, I was once again transported back into the story. The re-read was just as awesome as the first time around and I even slowed my pace down on the reading of the book as I wanted to absorb every character’s emotions.

I tried to slow it all down through the action scenes, but that was a little hard as my heart accelerated with swords flashing, blood running, bullets zipping, rockets launching and there was no way to read all that with any kind of calmness.

If GR gave more than five stars on here, then I would put this book up way past five as it deserves more than five stars as it delves out heart pounding action from the first chapter all the way to last chapter. My personal rating system this book should be seven stars. GR rating it is still a five.
