Hayden is seeking revenge. Relentlessly.

After years of all but selling his soul to track down his scoundrel of a father, Hayden Gale discovers his search must continue in South America, where his father is reported to be helping colonize Brazil. Hayden has nothing more to lose, certainly not a good reputation, and vows to keep pursuing–at any cost–the vile man who he believes killed his mother.

Magnolia is seeking a way out. Desperately.

She’s in the jungles of Brazil against her will, but what choice does Magnolia Scott have? Her father insisted on uprooting their family to escape the uncertainty of Southern life after the Civil War. But how will she survive without all she holds dear–wealthy suitors, beautiful clothes, summer balls, and slaves waiting on her every whim? She vows to find a way to get back home–and attaches herself to handsome Hayden Gale.

As they journey toward Rio de Janeiro, they each seek to use the other for their own purposes. Deceptively. Falling in love was never part of their plans….

Elusive Hope. I would be drawn in by that title alone if I didn’t know anything about the author/book. Having read the title, I would be even more drawn in when I saw the beautiful cover of this book.
I have loved MaryLu Tyndall’s books ever since I read The Charles Towne Belles series last summer. I have since then gobbled up all her books and have loved every single one. I own them all and they will be “keepers” on my shelf forever! I’m looking forward to reading them over and over again.

WOW! If you have loved anything by MaryLu Tyndall, you will LOVE this book just as much. Romance, mystery, spiritual warfare. There’s so much packed into this book and MaryLu does a great job of bringing it all together. I would definitely recommend reading Forsaken Dreams first. Reading that book first will help you understand a lot more of what is going on in this book. I am beyond excited to read the third and final book in the series. MaryLu did a great job of introducing the third book to us. She definitely left us with an eagerness to read on. I always hate cliffhangers but thankfully this cliffhanger is not so bad. I am only disappointed that I have to wait so long to read it! MaryLu has done an amazing job with this book – she just keeps getting better and better with each book! One of my favorite things about MaryLu as an author is that her stories are different from anything I’ve ever read before. And that’s what keeps bringing me back to her books.

I received a free ecopy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. I received no compensation for this review nor was I required to write a positive review. All opinions stated are my own.

It took me about two weeks to read Elusive Hope, and I can assure that it was not because I did not enjoy reading it. No, I wanted it to last as long as I could possibly make it last. Which was still not long enough.

I am pretty sure that Elusive Hope was better than the book before it in the Escape to Destiny trilogy, Forsaken Dreams, if that is even possible. Every single word was masterfully written, and I loved every second of this novel.

I am pretty sure that Elusive Hope was better than the book before it in the Escape to Destiny trilogy, Forsaken Dreams, if that is even possible. Every single word was masterfully written, and I loved every second of this novel.

Magnolia hates life in the fledgling Southern Utopia in Brazil her family forced her to move to. So, she sets her mind to running away, and going home, back where she hopes her fiance is still waiting for her. It turns out, Hayden, the charming man she regularly refers to as a toad, seems to be her ticket out. She braves the task of a multiple-day journey through the jungles of Brazil with Hayden to get to Rio in order to catch a ship back to the United States.

Trouble is, Hayden doesn’t plan on returning her to America. Hayden plans on doing what he, the confidence man, does best–swindle Magnolia out of her money.

The toiling trek to the jungle brings these two unlikely people together in ways they never would have suspected.

On the side, there are reoccurring creepy things happening in this creepy jungle including mysterious black mist, an abandoned cannibal’s dwelling, reoccurring visions of people from all the character’s pasts, and some dark forces that have been unleashed. Some of the scenes were written so well they actually had me kind of scared, as if I were right there with the characters.

Oh, by the way, there are pirates in this book! So I obviously loved that part. 🙂

The characters are wonderfully developed. I felt like I knew them personally! And, to top that, I felt Magnolia’s pain in trekking through the blisteringly hot jungle in all of her underskirts and hoops and high heels.
I loved how Magnolia’s character grew and changed throughout the novel, and I loved Hayden from the beginning and even more by the time I was finished reading.

All together, this is an absolutely lovely piece of writing and I think it has something in it to entertain everyone. I recommend it to all of my friends!

I tried my best to read this book slowly, to savor every morsel. But, it was so hard to slow down. Each chapter ended making me want to read more. I kept waiting for a lull in the story, so that I could have an excuse to stop reading for awhile. But, alas, a lull did not come. The sad part now is that I have to wait for what seems like forever for the third book in the series. Oh, pure torture!

Whether they are trekking through the jungles of Brazil, hanging out in the New Hope colony or exploring old temple ruins, the characters in Elusive Hope will have you experiencing a lot of emotions. I simple love the banter between Magnolia and Hayden. Talk about your odd couple…..a princess and a toad? Who would have thought? Then there are those characters that you just want to smack. And those that make you cringe at times. So much juicy things going on in this book and so wonderfully written.

I must add that MaryLu Tyndall did an excellent job with the spiritual warfare sections of this story. At times, I believe she actually channeled Frank Peretti. I truly cannot wait to get my hands on Book 3.…I need to see where she takes this story.

If you haven’t read Forsaken Dreams, Book 1 in the series, I recommend you buy it along with Elusive Hope. Forsaken Dreams tells how and why the characters went to Brazil…..Elusive Hope continues the story in the jungles of Brazil.

Bravo, MaryLu! You have a definite winner with this one!

Even though I was allowed to read this story in advance through NetGalley, I was under no obligation to give a positive review.
