Warning: I have a major problem with books in this series. I just can’t write reviews for them. Don’t ask me why, I have no idea. My two grey cells just seem to freeze whenever I try to write down how awesome it all is. My advice to you: skip this crappy excuse for a review and read the book instead. You’ll be glad you did.

→ Get it? Good. Moving on.

I love ALL the female characters in this book. They ALL kick ass in one way or another. YES they do.

I love how gender roles keep getting inverted, bent, seriously kicked in the butt and generally destroyed. Feminism is not dead. Nope nope nope.

I LOVE that the Loveable Macho Gang (Cayan & crew) are finally realizing that their female counterparts are as more badass than as they are. Learning your lesson boys, aren’t you now? Hahaha.

I love the way ALL the characters in this series are constantly evolving. They all feel real. And they’re all very cool. And YES I love them ALL.

I love that the romance isn’t stupid-silly-ridiculous lovey-dovey stuff and that it actually adds something to the story. YES YES YES.

I love the non-stop action. And the very cool fights. And the most excellent mental warfare. And the awesome yay-gore factor. And the delightfully affectionate deadly pets.

♥♥♥♥ HELL YES I LOVE IT ALL ♥♥♥♥

►► This series is nothing short of amazing. And the first instalment is only 99 cents right now. You’d be stupid silly not to give it a try. Yes you would.

Book 0.5: Forged in Blood ★★★★
    Book 1: Chosen ★★★★★
    Book 2: Hunted ★★★★★
    Book 4: Invasion ★★★★★
    Book 5: Siege ★★★★★
    Book 6: Overtaken ★★★

    Pre-review nonsense:

►► And the moral of this series is:

Shanti keeps getting cooler. And more badass.
All the female characters kick serious ass.
Gender roles? What gender roles? Cayan and his men have learned their lesson hahaha.
There is a bit more oh my god I’m going to be sick romance in this instalment but my allergy didn’t kick in. That’s how much I love this series.
Blood, gore, battles, fights, mental warfare, poison and beasts. Hell yeah.

►► And the other moral of this series is:

►► Crappy review to come. Maybe. I have the hardest time reviewing books in this series. It’s that cool.

They finally make it to the Shadow Lands and the trials for Chosen. The Shadow People apparently some long lost relatives of Shanti having the “old” blood. In this story, the quest company is split for a major part of the story and slows down a bit.

The strength of the series for me are the characters. With characters of Shanti’s company divided as she enters the trials, the story loses some of its magic. The chemistry becomes more diluted because it flows better as a whole group. The division though provides the opportunity (I think) to develop the other characters apart from Shanti and Cayan. This opportunity is not taken advantage of as much as it could have (IMO). More of the focus is devoted once again on Shanti and Cayan. The addition of some of the Shadow People characters create a rich group of characters to the story. If the other characters besides Shanti and Cayan don’t get some development, I think the story will suffer as a whole. The best way I can think to convey the idea is this: Imagine the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan if the whole story mainly focused on Rand ‘al Thor and we didn’t get to learn much about the rest of his friends that traveled with him?

The one-on-one type fight scenes are pretty well written. The larger scenes though remind a little of like listening to a hockey game on the radio. These are complicated scenes and are hard to describe. They just don’t seem to work very well for me. Maybe it is the setup going into the scene. I am not sure.

Again, the narrator does a great job performing the characters and bringing the book to life.

Hopefully, the next book will once again get me absorbed in this series.

I don’t know. I liked it better than Hunted, but I still didn’t love it as much as the first one, Chosen.

This one has Shanti and her crew arriving to the Shadow Lands, where she must go through the trials to become the Chosen. I thought the trials were underwhelming. Not much happened besides her having to defend herself against wild animals and go through some “survival” type issues. I guess I was expecting something a little more epic. And not enough of this:

I mean, there was action. Don’t get me wrong. But even the action scenes didn’t thrill me. It started strong and I thought I was really going to like it, but I lost interest about halfway through and it fizzled out for me. I thought too much time was spent not doing much. Maybe it’s just me.

    (view spoiler)

Ruisa was great. I like her. Sanders was great, as usual. I don’t know. I feel a bit unsatisfied, but it was still good.

Buddy Read with the MacHalo group. Because we love Shanti and her crew.
