The Sea Keepers Daughters is the third book in the Carolina series and it’s the first one I have read. The book can be read as a stand-alone, at least, I think so since I found this one to be perfectly fine to read even though I haven’t read the previous two books.

Here is the blurb from the book: From modern-day Roanoke Island to the sweeping backdrop of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains and Roosevelt’s WPA folklore writers, past and present intertwine to create an unexpected destiny…

I found it so beautifully written that I just had to add it to my review even though I ordinarily don’t do that, but it summarizes the book so well. I was quite captivated both by the blurb and the cover of the book, and I’m happy to say that the book was just as good as I hoped it to be.

I have found that I prefer romance book when the romance is incorporated into the story and not romance as the main genre. As long as the romance part doesn’t take the central stage is it fine and this book manages to convey an interesting story and integrate the romance part without making me mentally roll my eyes.

Whitney trying to save her restaurant and at the same time finding letters from her grandmother’s sister. Whitney never knew her grandmother had a sister so she is very surprised to learn that fact. As the story progress, we get to follow Whitney trying to find something among all the family heirlooms that will save her business, but we also get to know her grandmother’s sister Alice through the letters she discovers. She learns that Alice traveled the Blue Ridge Mountains as part of the Federal Writers’ Folklore Project.

I admit that I was taken by surprise how engaged in the story I would become and how the ending would make me feel. This was just a truly beautiful written story and I’m quite eager to get my hands on the two previous books in this series.

I received this copy from Tyndale House Publishers, Inc through Edelweiss in return for an honest review! Thank you!

    Recommends it for:
Fans of Nicholas Sparks and/or Mary Alice Monroe

Lovely – Sweet – Enlightening and Inspiring. This installment in Lisa Wingate’s “Carolina Heirlooms Series” is all of these things. A soft-spoken, kindly novel lifting the veil of family secrets in relation to race, heritage, unrequited love, grief, and the effects of echelon expectations.

“Perhaps denial is the mind’s way of protecting the heart from a sucker punch it can’t handle. Or maybe it’s simpler than that. Maybe denial in the face of overwhelming evidence is a mere byproduct of stubborn

“Perhaps denial is the mind’s way of protecting the heart from a sucker punch it can’t handle. Or maybe it’s simpler than that. Maybe denial in the face of overwhelming evidence is a mere byproduct of stubbornness.”

Whitney Monroe is having a run of bad luck, struggling to keep her two Minnesota restaurants out of the red. Thanks in part to a greed-thirsty saboteur, Whitney is facing trumped-up building and health code infractions, possibly losing restaurant number two as a result. The odds of keep her founding-restaurant viably in the black, isn’t looking too promising, either. Somewhat like her love life – a disaster waiting to happen. Tipping the scales further toward despair, Whitney is called away to North Carolina when her estranged and contemptuous step-father lands in the hospital after a fall.

“If you could know – if you could always know – when the ‘lasts’ in life are coming, you’d handle them differently. You’d savor. You’d stop. You’d let nothing else invade the moment.”

Driving down to North Carolina, Whitney makes plans to glean whatever antiques and/or valuables she can from her family’s old hotel (rightfully hers after her mother’s passing) so as to keep her restaurants afloat. Maybe this inconvenient jaunt down to North Carolina is a blessing in disguise. The problem is, her bitterly crusty step-father still lives in HER building. Tangling with him over heirlooms will only serve to open up old wounds. Then too, what to do about the business tenants on the ground floor should she decide to sell the old building?

“Suddenly it struck me that so many of the things I’d thought of as world-turning and earth-shattering probably weren’t. Life is a process of storms and rebuilding, of fire and regrowth, of loss and gain . . .”

While scrounging through years of amassed stuff in hopes of finding valuables to liquidate, Whitney discovers priceless treasures beyond compare: hidden letters and artifacts that open her eyes and heart to a new way of viewing family, heritage, love, grief, faith, and hope.

“How sad, I think now, to live an entire life blinded by the ordinary, when the path to the extraordinary waits just beyond the well-meaning prisons of our own making.”

Though a bit overindulgent in the realm of sweet serendipity – and quite a few editing foibles throughout, I found this an uplifting good read; a breath of fresh air after all the dark and gritty books I’ve read lately. Not quite as enrapturing as The Prayer Box or The Story Keeper, but I loved the Melungeon/Appalachian elements withing the Great Depression era backstory. These elements were most lovely and fascinating.

Three plus Stars, overall, with four-star historical elements. Fans of Nicholas Sparks or Mary Alice Monroe would probably enjoy this novel immensely.

2/13/18: Read this delightful book once again. This time, for book club. I greatly enjoyed it, even more so the second time around, I bumped up my rating to four stars.

    it was amazing

I was privileged to read an early copy. Once again, Wingate knocks it out of the park. It’s a real page turner and a book where you’ll get totally involved with the characters. And you’ll catch up with some of the characters from The Prayer Box and The Story Keeper. Definitely, I recommend you put on your To Be Read list.

It’s releasing September 1, and is available for pre-order now, I see.
