The Substitute Bride (The Great Wedding Giveaway, #7)

Once upon a time, Marly Akers had believed that, for better or worse, people made their own luck…

Marly wonders how she could ever have believed it. Jilted and pregnant, she’s come back to Marietta with her tail between her legs, the blow to her ego huge as she begins working at her family’s small newspaper, the Copper Mountain Courier, and sharing a tiny apartment with her disapproving mom.

Things can’t get any worse. Or maybe they can. Drake Everett, who secretly captured her teenaged heart and then publicly trampled on it, decides to make her re-acquaintance. Though Drake isn’t the sharp, funny, cocky, arrogant rich boy of yore. These days he seems sharp, funny… and supportive and decent, and Marly realizes she could fall for him all over again… if she listens to her heart. But what about her reporter’s head, which has sniffed out a story that paints Drake as the sweet talker she’s always known…?

Marly Akers came back to Marietta and is working with her mom at the Copper Mountain Gazette. That is a newspaper that has been in their family for years. Marly came home from her reporter job in a big city because she quit, her fiance found his old girlfriend a week before their wedding, they are no longer together and she is pregnant. Her mother had high hopes for her getting out of this small town, so she wouldn’t be stuck like she is. Drake Everitt is a rancher in Marietta to sell his dad’s

The Substitute Bride is book seven in The Great Wedding Giveaway series and is by Kathleen O’Brien. This is a short book and can be read as a stand alone. I have not read any of the other books in the series.

You know, when I read a book, I rate it on whether I connect emotionally with the characters. I want to be instantly pulled in, not want to put it down. I have to care about what happens to the characters. I want to think about them even when I’m not actually reading. These things are even h

You know, when I read a book, I rate it on whether I connect emotionally with the characters. I want to be instantly pulled in, not want to put it down. I have to care about what happens to the characters. I want to think about them even when I’m not actually reading. These things are even harder to accomplish with a shorter book. Previous to reading this, I read a fantastic book that I completely fell in love with so it was a hard act to follow but Kathleen O’Brien immediately made me forget about the previous characters. I was completely pulled in at page one, my previous book instantly forgotten. Mission accomplished.

    wedding dress in the box:

All Marly Akers ever wanted was to be a big time journalist. Her mother, a single parent, owns and runs the small town newspaper in Marietta, Montana, The Copper Mountain Courier. But she pounded it into her daughter’s head her entire life that she had to leave Marietta for a successful career. She wanted everything for her daughter she didn’t get to do herself. So nine years ago, that’s exactly what Marly did. She ended up in San Francisco and had a successful career and a fiancé. Until everything fell apart. Now she is returning home, her life a mess. No more fiancé, no more job. And she is pregnant.

The Substitute Bride - Kathleen O'Brien:

It doesn’t help that the first person Marly sees on her first morning in town is the subject of her teenage fantasies. Her high school crush and fellow high school newspaper co-worker, Drake Everett. Drake was the school jock, rich boy, funny boy. Marly was the nerd. But those differences didn’t stop Marly from daydreaming of Drake. At the end of their senior year, Drake asked Marly on a date, to go to a party with him. And he never showed up. She was stood up.

    cowboy and horse:

Drake Everett can’t believe Marly is back in town. So of course, he immediately wants to apologize for what happened all those years ago, to explain. Marly is just as beautiful as he remembers. She never knew the huge crush he had on her in high school. She also never knew what Drake’s life back then was really like. Things he kept carefully hidden. Will she give him a chance to explain? Will she forgive him?

“He might not have laid eyes on her for nine years, but her memory had always lived vividly in his mind.”

All Marly wants to do is find a new job, to get back out of Marietta. What she doesn’t expect is to feel this connection with the now all grown up and very sexy Drake. There is a definite attraction and it is obvious he feels the same way. The first story her mother gives her to cover is the pending Great Wedding Giveaway. When reviewing the tapes for the finalists, Marly discovers something that makes her question the man she was just beginning to have feelings for. Rather than give him a chance to explain, she comes to her own conclusions.

    barn dance:

This was such a good book. I fell in love with Marly and Drake right away. These are two people that clearly deserved a second chance at love and they were perfect for each other. I’ve read several books by different authors revolving around Marietta, Montana and I am so smitten with this little town. This is only the second book of Kathleen O’Brien’s that I have ever read but it definitely makes me want to read more.

A Book to Fall in Love With

Just slightly more erotic than sweet, this is a book to read when you need a”happy” story that is connected, clearly and obviously, to other happy ending stories. While I’m not sure I would recommend it to my mom, I am sure a few of my friends would love it, and even maybe a couple of my sisters.

Just slightly more erotic than sweet, this is a book to read when you need a”happy” story that is connected, clearly and obviously, to other happy ending stories. While I’m not sure I would recommend it to my mom, I am sure a few of my friends would love it, and even maybe a couple of my sisters.
“The Substitute Bride” is actually about three substitutions in weddings. Each couple has challenges ahead, but for the moment, the emphasis is on getting to “I do”. The author has a wonderful grasp of human emotion and the mysterious things that provide the drive for all of us. Above all, in this story, she is doing an examination of the things that drive the relationship between a mother and her daughter. And all the things that these two types of people do to each other in their efforts to define themselves without damaging the image the other has of them.
I adored Marley from word one, but I found myself thinking a lot about my mother as I “met” Angelina and got to know her better. I’m pretty sure the author had no intention of causing such introspection when she started to write, but I found myself thinking about the relationship I have with my own mother.
The book is part of a series. I highly recommend it, and suspect I feel the same way about the other books in the group.
