This isn’t the actual title of the book–it’s the Wastewater Gardener. I reviewed this for Library Journal and really enjoyed it, but you may need to have my unique set of interests to feel the same way. I found it very inspiring to figure out that there are ways we really can live in harmony with the global water cycle and not waste all our potable water.

THE WASTEWATER GARDENER by Mark Nelson

I received a signed, paperback copy of this book for free through the Goodreads Giveaway program at www.goodreads.com/giveaway
In exchange for the book I am posting my honest review.

This book will open your eyes to the usefulness of human waste. It may not be a popular topic, but, as the author points out throughout the book, it is an important one.

I expected this to be a “dry” read and I figured that it would take me a long time to finish reading this book.

I expected this to be a “dry” read and I figured that it would take me a long time to finish reading this book. This, happily, was not the case. I was hooked into the narrative as soon as I began reading.

The author broaches a subject which has long been a taboo topic in polite society. That topic is … Well, human shit, or poop or more politely, humanure.

The book is written with humor and is written in such a way that it seems more like an adventure tale than a learning tool. But, it is both. Mark Nelson has certainly led an interesting life and has had many adventures. He has done this while making a positive impact on not only the environment, but also in the lives (and health) of the people in the regions he has visited.

Waste treatment facilities often are huge and smelly and waste millions of gallons of fresh water annually. Our culture’s current way of dealing with human waste is inefficient and extremely wasteful. That “Wastewater Gardens” exist is not news to me, what is news to me is the fact that they work so well.

One of the reasons my husband and I (who absolutely love to travel) have been reluctant to visit Mexico and in particular the Mayan Riviera region is the horror stories we have heard about their waste management systems. Who wants to go diving at a beautiful coral reef only to discover “brown trout” (shit) floating amongst the coral? I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the author and his colleagues have successfully installed wastewater gardens in that region to address the issue of the lack of sewage management in the region.

I encourage everyone who cares about the future of our planet to read this book and to perhaps consider having their own wastewater garden installed.

I hope to see more mainstream integration of these systems in the near future and I thank Mark Nelson for opening my eyes to the possibilities.

This book deserves 5 out of 5 stars.

    review of another edition

The Wastewater Gardener is Mark Nelson’s journey into the world of sewage treatment or shit management, whichever floats your boat. As part of the Biosphere 2 team, he helped to develop a water treatment and recycling system using plants that are normally part of a wetland. Wetlands are already efficient treatment systems that are capable of filtering out everything up to heavy metals. Some plants from the wastewater garden can even be harvested for food. Using and building upon this idea, Mark

A highly important ecological issue that no one wants to talk about is human waste management, but it is increasingly important today since it directly ties into water quality and water usage as well as habitat destruction and food availability. Using down to earth methods and humor, The Wastewater Gardener offers a much better solution to our human waste issues. I was really interested in Mark’s time spent in the Biosphere as well as his practical applications of the wastewater garden and the plants he used within them. I live in a cooler climate and most of the examples were in warmer climates; however there were examples of wastewater gardens placed in Poland and France that would be more similar to my climate. Hopefully we will use Mark’s insights to be more mindful of our human waste issue.

This book was received for free in return for an honest review.
